our covid19 response

The safety of our staff and customers are priority.

Since our restaurant and bar first closed in March 2020, management at The Coug has been enhancing our policies and procedures to meet and exceed the guidelines set by the state of Washington for phased reopening. Our approach continues to evolve daily while always keeping the health and safety of our staff and customers front of mind.

Resources we trust and are using to inform our response include:

  1. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - cdc.gov

  2. Washington State Coronavirus Response - coronavirus.wa.gov

  3. Washington Hospitality Association - hub.wahospitality.org/coronavirus-resource/

Open or closed, we hope the steps we’re taking set an example and can be easily replicated by anyone else in our community looking to set up a similar system of evolving opperations. We’ve been given a generous amount of access to resources and insight we would prefer everyone gets to benefit from. Go Cougs!

basic expectations

Social DISTANCING of Minimum 6 feet

Optional TEMPERATURE CHECK

guidelines:

We are currently operating under the updated Phase 2 Guidelines in accordance with State of Washington mandates.

INDOOR SEATING CAPACITY

We are allowed 25% capacity for dine-in guests at The Coug. This is less than 30 people.

Inside we have 5 tables available for 5 groups of people. Groups are limited to 6 people. You cannot stand alone or stand in a group away from your table. You cannot join another group other than your own for any period of time.

OUTDOOR TERRACE CAPACITY

The terrace is considered separate from inside the building. We have removed 2 tables and most outdoor seating to accommodate our limited capacity expectations.

Outside on the terrace, we have 2 tables available for 2 groups of people. Groups are limited to 6 people. You cannot stand alone or stand in a group away from your table. You cannot join another group other than your own for any period of time. We expect you to not interact with the line on the sidewalk.

ENTERING THE BUILDING

All guests are encouraged to share their names and contact information for our records. Temperature checks at The Coug are optional and available by request. If you have a fever or show any sign of illness, you will not be allowed in the building or on our terrace.

All staff are required to wear masks. Whitman County Health Department REQUIRES EVERYONE wear cloth masks when away from their table. Whitman County Health advises all customers wear cloth face coverings when arriving/leaving their tables, and using the restroom. Plastic dividers have been placed around tables.

ORDERING SOCIALLY DISTANT

While we social distance, this is a great time to start buying rounds for your tables. The entire group does not need to get up and get in line. One person at a time is ideal. We have marked with tape inside, temporarily, where individuals are expected to wait.

We have contactless options for our food/beer menus. Food can be ordered digitally, as well.

Refer to Dine In & Tableside or Carryout & Delivery for our expectations and procedures.

RESPECTING SOCIAL DISTANCE

The Coug cannot control what people do on public property like the sidewalk. We do ask that everyone please do their best to maintain social distancing between groups. If we notice you are in line and not respecting social distance between groups, we will not allow you in.

As we work to enforce policies inside the building, we ask for the same respect. We will ask you to leave if you do not comply.

TEMPORARY CHANGES

We expect that you will not move from table to table or interact with groups that are not your own.

This is a TEMPORARY change to our culture. Not being able to jump between tables, make new friends, or just say hi goes against everything the Coug is. But these rules allow us to stay open. These policies protect the health and safety of our staff and customers.

ENJOYING THE COUG AWAY FROM THE COUG

If you still want to maintain distance outside of the Coug, we have carryout and curbside options for food and drinks. Cougaritas, Quick and Shirleys, Trash Cans, Growlers, Corn Dogs, Tots, Burgers, and more are all available to-go.

Call (509) 332-1265 for phone orders or questions during operating hours. Open 11:00 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday thru Saturday. Any closures will be noted on our social media.

how covid19 spreads

COVID19 is caused by a coronavirus strain called SARS-CoV-2.

Coronaviruses are common. Coronaviruses circulate among humans and some species of animals. Most cause mild illness, like the common cold. Their severity varies from strain to strain.

COVID19 is a new disease, or a new coronavirus, that has not impacted humans before. It is not as mild as others and demands extra precaution as we fight it’s outbreak.

Extremely contageous, COVID19 is understood to spread from person to person through respitory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. These droplets released in the air can carry the virus and land in the mouths and noses of people who are nearby or possibly inhaled into the lungs.

Someone does not need to be showing symptoms to be carrying the virus. Many can spread COVID19 by being asymptomatic (not showing any symptoms). Spread is more likely between people in close contact (within about 6 feet).

Contaminated surfaces such as cardboard, plastic, clothing, and other surfaces that get touched often can carry COVID19.

Physically distancing, washing hands, wearing masks, and disinfecting surfaces are the best ways we can combat COVID19 together.

Wearing masks

Masks are Mandatory.

We're encouraging education & preparation in proper mask.

Education & preparation supports your wellbeing & the wellbeing of every other business you might visit in our community.

There are options for cloth coverings:

  • Gaiters.

  • Bandanas.

  • Standard masks with straps.

WEAR MASKS ANY TIME YOU ARE NOT ACTIVELY EATING OR DRINKING:

  • On our terrace.

  • In line inside The Coug.

  • In line outside The Coug.

  • When using the restroom.

  • When ordering food or drinks.

  • When being served at your table.

KEEP MASKS TIGHT BUT COMFORTABLE & DO NOT WEAR BENEATH NOSE.

These are standards most restaurants & bars should expect of you, too. Be prepared.

We understand there are some cases where masks cannot be warn. Particularly for people with disabilities. This is respected.

Please do not use exemptions unless necessary. That behavior jeopardizes the safety of our staff, our customers, & those with legitimate disabilities.

As we continue to take the steps necessary to keep things safe & healthy for everyone, we hope you continue to do the same.

  • After touching an animal

Everyone should avoid:

  • Touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands

Best steps for washing hands well:

  1. Grab a paper towel and turn on water

  3. Lather hands and forearms with soap

  4. Scrub hands, forearms, underneath findernails, and between fingers for about 20 seconds.
